"Heck, we got to do something," Silas moaned almost a week later when matters had not improved. He'd been cleared that day by the doctor to interact freely with others. "I think she's going to die."

"What do you think we can do that Dr. Olsen isn't already trying?"

"Maybe we can take her somewhere. We could get her to San Francisco, or maybe Denver.

Heck shook his head.

"I don't think that would be wise," he warned. "You've told me how weak she is. A trip like that would be very hard on her. It could well sap her strength and make matters worse. It might be what kills her. Besides, I doubt she'd agree. She's been pretty firm in where she wants to be during this ordeal."

"But Dr. Olsen doesn't seem at all certain about how to help her."

"From what I've been told, Olsen is one of the best. If he doesn't know, it may be that nobody does. These things are not all that well understood."

Silas stood up and paced back and forth between the fireplace and the table where he'd been sitting. Clearly he was having difficulty adjusting to the possibility that Sally might not recover. Six had died, and there were no guarantees here.

"Maybe we can bring someone here. Dr. Olsen says there is someone very knowledgeable in New York. Sally has money. Maybe he can be persuaded to come and help."

"You can try," Heck said, knowing he had to offer Silas some kind of reassurance. We can go and send a telegram right now and see what he says."

"We'll have to get his name from Dr. Olsen," Silas said. "I'm a little uncomfortable at how he'll react when he knows we are looking for someone else."

As it turned out, there was no need. When they arrived at the clinic, a very sad nurse informed them that Sally had passed suddenly just a short time earlier. They had sent a messenger to the house when she appeared to be having trouble breathing, but hadn't been able to locate Silas.
